While all rain jackets are aimed at blocking out precipitation, there are other considerations depending on the local climate. In warmer regions, breathability and ventilation are key. Keep an eye out for the moisture vapor transfer rate (MVTR), which some brands disclose. A jacket membrane is considered very breathable if the MVTR is at or above 10,000g/m²/24h.

Vents typically come in the form of underarm zips (also known as pit zips), pockets, or covered back vents. For Dan Purdy of Wildland Trekking, pit zips can be essential to prevent overheating. “I just completed a 25-day trek in Nepal, and pit zips were absolutely the most important feature to keep me comfortable in my rain jacket,” says Purdy.

Although breathability is still important for rain gear in colder climates, it’s also worth paying attention to insulation, wind resistance, and if a jacket is roomy enough for multiple base layers.

Rain jackets are available with a range of features, like pockets, hoods, vents, and points of adjustment. How these features are designed and incorporated into a rain jacket will impact performance for everyday use and different outdoor activities.

Dan Purdy notes that hood design can play a crucial role. “If you’re climbing or cycling, a roomy, helmet-compatible hood is a must,” he notes. Additionally, backpackers will likely benefit from rain jackets with higher pockets to avoid obstruction with straps or a hip belt.

Dan Purdy recommends a two-fold approach to washing rain jackets. “First, clean the jacket using a technical gear-specific soap that won’t damage the waterproofing membrane or material,” says Purdy. Next, some jackets may require a refresh to their water-repellent coating.

According to Purdy, “the clearest indicator that a jacket needs washing is when it’s wetting out,” meaning the rain seeps into the jacket instead of beading up and rolling off.

Some lightweight jackets pack easily into a pocket that doubles as a storage pouch. However, for long-term storage, it’s beneficial to hang them with room to breathe instead of folding to avoid creases and mildew buildup.

Waterproof and water-resistant can be thought of as a spectrum of protection, with waterproof being the most robust. Water-resistant jackets will only repel moisture to some degree. Waterproof jackets typically use a breathable membrane or laminate to trap out moisture. “Gore-Tex is a reliable waterproof jacket material, although many brands also have their own proprietary materials for a waterproofing layer,” according to Purdy.
